Data protection

Many owners, managers and operators of CCTV schemes are still unaware that it is a criminal offence to use an unregistered CCTV system in a public place.  Companies challenged over the use of their scheme in publicly accessible areas will need to prove they are operating in accordance with the Data Protection Act, 1998 and other related legislation.

Can you answer the below questions?

 1. Are you operating your CCTV system within the law  YES/NO
 2. Are you aware of your requirements under the
Data Protection Act to register your CCTV system or otherwise.
 YES/NO
 3. Do you use your system in publicly accessible areas?  YES/NO
 4. Do you process personal data?   YES/NO
 5. Do you know what 'subject access' means?  YES/NO
 6. Do you know what a 'data controller' is?  YES/NO

If you have answered any of the questions with 'NO' we would seriously recommend  you seek advice.  EA Group always strive to promote good practice in the use of CCTV systems and can offer their services to existing or new clients in respect of the Data Protection compliance.  We also recommend that you visit  www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk
