Perimeter secures key London Bridge Redevelopment
Security specialist Perimeter Security has played a key role in securing the re-development of the riverside London Bridge site. The site, which includes landmarks such as Norman Foster's innovative GLA building and the new site for Ernst and Young's European Headquarters, is high-profile and is of strategic importance both to the Greater London Authority and as a 'symbol' of London.
Phase One of the massive redevelopment programme was completed in May 2002 and saw the security infrastructure put in place in preparation for the next phase which begins this Autumn.
At the initial tender process, a 200 page specification was issued to several companies, and Perimeter was the only one to successfully deliver a bid within the two week time period allowed. The selection was based on the quality of Perimeter's previous installations and its ability to offer the full range of security solutions requested.
As a multi-disciplined security project, Perimeter has since been fully responsible for the supply and installation of equipment across all areas including CCTV, access control and alarms.
The site is divided into different areas, each with its specific security needs. In the service tunnels there are 15 fully-functional PTZ cameras, whilst a further 10 colour cameras have been installed to cover the public areas and the entrance/exit of the principal GLA building.
An intruder detection system protects the perimeter, whilst access to the building is controlled by a combination of proximity technology and two-way intercom.
Very high quality images from each camera are transmitted over a fibre network to a purpose-built control room featuring the very latest Security Management System with graphical user interface. Here, pictures can be viewed immediately and automatically recorded using state-of-the-art digital video recording technology. (Images can be stored and instantly retrieved and reviewed for up to 31 days after recording).
On the access roads there are automatic rising bollards and high security auto road blockers to control traffic flow and prevent unauthorised entry.
As Bob Munday, Managing Director of Perimeter Security comments: "The specifications are extremely high for this project. We have installed a totally integrated package which is monitored by a centralised control room. A separate traffic control room, located outside the main building is fully equipped to provide dedicated control of this area"
CIT Group who managed the project, comments: "Quality, performance and attention to detail are what have characterised Perimeter's work so far. Perimeter's technical expertise goes without saying, but it has even taken care to supply tailor-made cameras so that their design and colour scheme will fit in with the overall aesthetics of the site. I have been extremely impressed by the standard of service and dedication throughout this first phase of the project."
There have been a series of monthly meetings and Perimeter has dedicated three engineers to the site full-time. A guaranteed four-hour response service package has also been set up to cater for all eventualities.
Bob Munday, Managing Director of Perimeter Security comments: "We are thrilled to be making a contribution to such a significant site and I am extremely proud of the professionalism and efficiency that the team has demonstrated in running such a complex project."
Throughout the next phase, Perimeter will continue to install security equipment as the site develops and new buildings are constructed.
